And...relax.
At the peak of the campaign, we were #98 overall, #75 in Fiction and #24 in Nonfiction. Not quite #1 but a bloody good effort, and thanks to all you mischievious monkeys for jumping in.

Please don't buy the book while it costs money (that would rather defeat the purpose) but do feel free to use the Review section as an opportunity to make your thoughts known to Amazon. Meanwhile, we'll try and make the book free again as soon as possible.

El Dink will keep writing about Amazon products. The Kindle is a huge opportunity for indie authors, even if it's the work of a ruthless multinational. But in 2013 we'll try and give more coverage to the ebook alternatives as well (we're already at work on better Smashwords integration).

Cheers guys, and happy new year,

bleary, El Editor

Today, El Dink have launched the #1clickprotest, a simple way for Amazon account holders to show that they're not happy with Amazon's tax strategy. It's a really simple protest that uses Amazon's own publishing system to get the message through to them.

What do we do?

Protest with one click by downloading the free eBook, Pay Your Taxes: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pay-Your-Taxes-ebook/dp/B00AKN9AJ4. That's it.

And then what?

The book is free until January 1st and the hope is that by then it will have become one of the most popular books in the Kindle store. It's an easy way to help send a clear message to Amazon: Pay your taxes!

Is a Kindle required?

No, you can download the book if you've got the Kindle app on your phone, tablet or computer.

What if I can't/don't want to download the book?

That's fine. Use the Reviews to leave a clear message to Amazon about their corporate responsibilites.

Is this actually a real book?

Yes, there's a short illustrated story inside it. It's got Balrogs and Paul Daniels in it. You're not obliged to read it.

Are UK Uncut involved in this?

No, this is entirely organised by the folks behind eldink.co.uk. But we've included a shoutout to UK Uncut in the book, just because they're cool.

Who is Asher Gowan?

No one. It's a joke. Try saying it in an Irish accent. If you still don't get it, try saying "Asher Gowan Gowan Gowan" in an Irish accent.

Why target Amazon? What they're doing is perfectly legal. Shouldn't we be targeting the government?

Sure, the only real solution to tax avoidance is for the government to close loopholes, and anything that puts pressure on them is great. But it's worth remembering that loopholes exist because multinationals demand them. Closing loopholes is bad for growth and investment in UK business, which is why the government are reluctant to adress the issue. So one small step we can take to help is to make tax avoidance absolutely toxic, a PR disaster as bad as oil spills or employing predatory DJs for 40 years.

Pay Your Taxes

Download the book for free from Amazon.co.uk. NB: The book is only free until January 1st. We tried to make it free forever, but Amazon were having none of it.
